Day 1: La Fortuna – San Carlos – Kayak at Los Guatuzos Wildlife Reserve
An air-conditioned bus takes you to the border village of Los Chiles in about 1 ½ hours. After a fast immigration process, you take the Agua Trails boat towards the San Juan River. In San Carlos, a small town on the banks of the San Juan River and Lake Nicaragua, you get acquainted with the typical Nicaraguan way of life. After lunch you get a brief introduction on the kayak safety instructions and some basic training on how to handle your kayak. In the afternoon you explore the Wildlife Reserve of Los Guatuzos by kayak, before heading back to the lodge in time for dinner and a good night’s rest.
Day 2: Kayak route: San Carlos – Boca de Sábalos
Today the first chapter of our expedition really begins as you set off into the Nicaraguan wildnerness on the first day of our trip down the San Juan River. You have lunch at a local riverside community. Tonight you overnight in the treetop cabins at the Sabalas Lodge and private reserve….don’t be surprised if you are woken up to the sound of howler monkeys!
Day 3: Kayak route: Boca de Sábalos – El Castillo
Today you paddle to the picturesque town of El Castillo, located almost midway between Lake Nicaragua and the Caribbean Sea, home to an ancient Spanish fort built in 1675. The scenery is simply amazing; Orchids and Bromeliads add a splash of color to the shades of the green rainforest foliage. In the afternoon you have time to stroll through the streets and visit the Fortress of the Immaculate Conception. If you are an experienced paddler, you can have an afternoon full of adventure, crossing the impressive white water rapid in front of El Castillo town (optional). Tonight you have a good night’s rest at a fine hotel in El Castillo town, which has a view over San Juan River.
Day 4: El Castillo – San Carlos – La Fortuna
After breakfast with a view over the river, you return to La Fortuna, Costa Rica. A public boat will take you and the kayak back to the first hotel, where you will have a refreshing drink and afterwards you will visit the riverside town of San Carlos, for a short walking tour through the historic town center.
